As many know, my husband bleeds Cubbies blue, therefore, by association, I have become a fan as well. Although I have been criticized repeatedly for following the "Might have been" team, being a Cubs fan obviously isn't borne from victories. If that were the case, Wrigley Field would be a vacant parking lot throughout the dog days of summer. The Chicago Cubs are an institution, steeped in history, full of legend and lore. Upon arriving in Wrigleyville, you are immediately immersed in the occasion of a game. Restaurants doors and windows are thrown open, inviting fans in and offering a glimpse of the entertainment that can be found inside. Aromas of Chicago style hot dogs, blending with beer and peanuts waft through the streets, which are packed with hundreds of Cubbies fans. These fans suddenly go from being total strangers, to the best of friends. The camaraderie found within those city blocks surrounding Wrigley Field, is second to none. As you near the field, the sounds of street musicians, vendors, and ticket "brokers" reach an all time high. Everywhere you look, Cub's reds and blues are proudly displayed. Smiles, laughter and song can be heard all around. Standing proudly at the entrance, a bronze of Harry Carey guards the gates. Upon entering the hallowed halls of Wrigley, the atmosphere changes to a frenetic pace. Fans race to get to their seats, anxious to get their first glimpse of the beautiful green fields and ivy covered stands. As the ceremonial first pitch is thrown, the momentum builds. Surrounded by the sounds of the game, you quickly become immersed in the spirit of baseball. The sharp crack of the bat, and shouts of the hot dog vendors all blend together making each experience unique. Rounding out the seventh inning, you join with thousands of people, all brought together by the love of THIS game and THIS team and sing the signature song "Take me out to the ballgame". Nearing the ninth, holding their collective breaths, each and every Cubs fans hope this will be "it" , maybe THIS year.
Whether it is or not, win or lose, Cubs fans will always journey to that Ivy Covered field. We will always "root, root, root for our Cubbies", because at the end of this magical day, we know there will always be a place where smiles are abundant, everyone becomes family, and welcomes you into theirs. The day full of sunshine and memories has made us all a part of that history surrounding the coveted stadium at Wrigley, home of the Cubs. So with the bittersweet ending of the game, I continue to say it loud and say it proud, "GO CUBS GO!"
